Since 2018 we have been busily collecting votes in our online poll to find out who is the most popular choice for the mantle of having been Jack the Ripper.

We now have over 22,000 votes and we have a wide variety of suspects.

WHO’S WINNING SO FAR?

Since the poll had now been going for four years we have had plenty of time to get a clear leader – and the suspect who shot into first place almost immediately, and who has been there ever sine is Aaron Kosminski.

The second and third place did for a time alternate between two suspects – namely Dr. Francis Tumblety and Charles Cross.

However, for the past eighteen months Tumblety, the quack American doctor had held Charles Cross at bay, and Tumblety has been sitting pretty in second place.

A CAST OF HUNDREDS

Of course, one of the issues about the Whitechapel murders is that the list of potential suspects quite literally runs into the hundreds, and there were other suspects at the time whose names have never made it on the list.

James Maybrick  and Montague John Druitt, for example, are sitting in fourth and fifth place respectively, and, it has to be said, they are both a long way behind the top three contenders.

Interestingly, Walter Sickert is in sixth place and he is, again, quite a way behind the top five Jack the Ripper suspects.

JUST SOME LOCAL NOBODY

One of the intriguing results is that almost two thousand people have voted for “Just Some Local Nobody.”

This is an intriguing result, and is probably closer to the truth than many of the other suspects whose names have found their ay onto the list.

Even at the time of the murders, there was a widely held, and publicised belief, that, if the perpetrators true identity was ever revealed, it would probably turn out to be some every day person who lived in the area, and who people though was a little odd.

SO BE SURE TO CAST YOUR VOTE

So, if you do happen to have a favoured suspect, be sure to cast your vote, if you haven’t so far, and help us gain an idea of which of the many suspects is top of the list.
